Research: The Youth Assessment Screening Instrument is a interview-based assessment tool that measures a range of risk, need, and protective factors. The YASI is used to develop case plans for justice involved youth and to assess their likelihood of re-offending. The primary objective of Celia’s master’s thesis was to examine the psychometric properties of the YASI with a Canadian sample of male youthful offenders. Specifically, the reliability (i.e., internal consistency and inter-rater reliability), concurrent validity with the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory 2.0 and convergent validity with the Hare Psychopathy Checklist: Youth Version were examined. The utility of using comprehensive risk/need assessment tools for the assessment and management of youthful offenders was discussed.
