Transitioning into the Private Sector
Thursday, September 22, 2022 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm
- In-person event
This session is organized by the Graduate Career Transitions Mentor for the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and is open to all graduate students, postdocs, and alumni.
Join us to talk about how to navigate the move from grad school to the private sector. Wondering what to put on your CV and what new skills you will need? Not sure how to network and negotiate salary and terms of employment? Curious about what the first few years in industry will look like? Guest speaker Ashwin Panchapakesan (PhD Artificial Intelligence) will share insights from his work as a data Scientist at The SecDev Group where he identifies online harms to at-risk communities around the world. We are looking forward to seeing you soon!
Dr. Ashwin Panchapakesan has worked in academia, government, and private industry, and brings an intersectional perspective to his current role as a Data Scientist at The SecDev Group, helping identify online harms to at-risk communities around the world. Throughout his graduate work at the University of Ottawa, he refused to let go of his inner child, while he worked on artificial intelligence, process refinement, and data fusion. He has always been interested in practical solutions to problems in the real world and has worked towards bridging the gap between theory-heavy graduate work, and how they can solve practical real-world problems. During his graduate career, he facilitated connections as the president of the Computer Science Graduate Students’ Association to help connect other graduate students to employment opportunities.
All graduate students are welcome. If you are a TA, this session counts toward voluntary paid training hours, provided that you are working as a TA in the term when the training takes place.
