Coding for the Humanities: workshop 3 of 4

Tuesday, May 2, 2023 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm

These workshops are designed to introduce humanities scholars to coding in the humanities. This suite of four workshops includes:

  1. Creating a static page for cuPortfolio (learning to use the command line and GitHub)
  2. Python I: Basic coding for text analysis
  3. Python II: CSV files for literature reviews
  4. Python III: Error searching, web scraping, and the ethics of open data

Each of these workshops introduces a core topic for those interested in computational methods for the humanities and provides opportunities to apply the ideas and techniques discussed. The workshops as scaffolded to ensure that participants can progress from simpler strategies to more sophisticated approaches. For example:

Learning outcomes

The workshops will run on the following dates and times. These sessions are in person only, with the exception of the technical set up session.

Please note: Because this workshop takes place after March, time spent in these workshops cannot count toward paid pedagogical training hours. However, for those completing the Research Management certificate in the Trajectories program, Workshop 1 (on creating a static page for CUPortfolio) can count as a “group 1” workshop, and one of Workshops 2, 3, or 4 (the Python workshops) can count as a “group 2” workshop.
