Coding for the Humanities (Weekly Series)

This series of workshops introduces humanities scholars to coding in the humanities. The suite of workshops covers the following topics:

  1. Computing basics, including using the command line, Visual Studio Code, and Git.
  2. Python I: Fundamentals
  3. Python II: Advanced fundamentals
  4. Python III: Libraries
  5. Case study: Python for literature reviews
  6. Troubleshooting: Errors and searches for code

Each of these workshops introduces a core topic for those interested in computational methods for the humanities and provides opportunities to apply the ideas and techniques discussed.
Learning outcomes:

  1. Setup Windows or Mac system to meet workshop technical requirements.
  2. Write some basic commands to access files from their desktop/laptop directory.
  3. Identify the benefits of using Python for certain humanistic research problems.
  4. Import a CSV from Omni (Library discovery tool) into Python and then use pandas and NLTK to analyze the data in the CSV file.

The workshops will run on the following dates and times. These sessions are in person only.

Open to graduate and undergraduate students. For those graduate students working as TAs during the term in which the series takes place, hours spent attending the series before November 30 can count toward paid pedagogical training training hours.

For those registered in the Trajectories program, attendance in any of the sessions in this workshop series counts toward one of the required workshops for the Research Management non-credit Trajectories certificate. Please note: only one of the sessions in this series can count toward the required workshops for the certificate.
