Writing about Theory
Friday, July 4, 2025 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am
- In-person event
Description:
Writing about theory, or theorizing as it is sometimes described, is one of the most challenging aspects of academic writing. This is partly due to confusion surrounding the nature and function of theory, two areas that will be addressed at length in this session. In addition to exploring what theory is and what it does, the session will introduce participants to actionable strategies for writing about theory and situating their work within broader scholarly conversations. The ultimate goal of this session is to explore strategies for conceptualizing and critically engaging with theory across disciplines.
Learning outcomes:
- Describe the different views on how theory should be defined and conceptualized
- Identify the various functions of theory in academic writing
- Define key terms related to theory and theorization
- Outline different strategies for approaching theoretical sections in academic text
