The iTeam helps Reunite Owners with their Lost iPads
The iTeam works with Information Carleton (located in the Galleria linking the 4th Floor of the Unicentre) to return any iPad or iPhone whose owner cannot be readily identified, and so needs forensic analysis.
You can be reunited with your lost iPad sooner if you follow our tips below.
1. Mark your device
- Put a label or tape a card to the back of the device with how to reach you. Remember to include an alternate phone no. if it’s your cellphone and an email that you check regularly.
- Name your device in iTunes: Jane Doe’s iPod instead of iPod
This allows anyone to plug the device into a computer, and even though it’s locked with a passcode, they can still see the device name.
Note: for the protection of your privacy, always set up a passcode on your device - Set up Find My iPhone on your iPhone or iPad.
This allows you to locate a misplaced device, cause it to ring and display a message, or worst-case perform a remote-wipe to protect your data.
2. Drop off any device you find at Carleton’s Lost & Found
Carleton’s main Lost and Found is at Information Carleton in the Galleria linking the 4th Floor of the Unicentre with the 2nd Floor of Tory, near the Starbucks.
But you can also drop off found devices at Security (Robertson Hall 7/24/365) as well as at Athletics and Housing in the Residence Commons. After a few days, unclaimed devices are sent to Information Carleton.
3. Forensic Lost and Found Service
Information Carleton will search any devices for the owner’s name information, including accessing unlocked devices.
If the owner’s name cannot be determined, or if the device is locked with a passcode, Information Carleton will forward the device to ITS or members of the iTeam for help. For example, if the device has a SIM card (e.g. phone, 3G iPad), ITS will contact the wireless provider to find out to whom the SIM card is registered. ITS will also connect the device to a computer running iTunes to read the device’s name. If it has been named “Jane Doe’s iPad”, ITS will then search for “Jane Doe” in the campus community. The iTeam also has used other techniques to reunite lost devices with their owners. It makes our day!
