What is OneDrive?

Storage, in Microsoft’s Office 365 cloud, that Microsoft offers to email account holders at institutions that use Exchange Online. Carleton uses Exchange Online to provide email services for staff/faculty and students.

Uses of OneDrive

  • Insurance: If your computer breaks or is stolen, access the files that were online as well as those in your sync’d folder, from any replacement computer/phone/tablet.
  • Out-of-Office Access: files stored in OneDrive are accessible from any other computer. e.g. home computer
  • Collaborate: Share a document or folder with another OneDrive user, including real-time joint editing
  • Keep work files separate from personal files: keep your Carleton work files on OneDrive for Business, separate from any personal OneDrive, DropBox, or Google Docs accounts you may have.
  • Replacement for P-drive

Non-optimal uses for OneDrive

  • Large team collaboration
When more than a few people are contributing to a collaborative file site, it’s very useful to supplement updating files and folders with online notes, email update notices, revision history.
