In September 2019, LERRN and the Refugee Hub convened researchers, practitioners and policymakers for a Policy Dialogue to explore how Canada can support meaningful refugee participation. Refugee-led organizations often express the principle “nothing about us without us” to highlight the importance of including refugees in discussions and decisions that impact their lives, not only when implementing projects and policies but also from the beginning of the design process. Participants proposed seven action items to support refugee participation going forward: a mentorship program for refugee leaders in Canada, refugee participation related to the Global Compact on Refugees, the development of guiding principles for refugee participation, support of creative expression, the creation of a fund to support refugee participation, and greater participation in the design of research.
