On 18 September 2019, Janemary Ruhundwa, Executive Director of Dignity Kwanza and lead of LERRN’s Tanzania Working Group, published an op-ed in The Citizen, one of Tanzania’s leading English-language newspapers, reflecting on the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the 1969 OAU Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa.
In the piece, she calls for “a new way of responding to the protracted nature of asylum” in Africa, and highlights the “shift towards creating conditions for refugees to rebuild their lives” while in exile.
The article underscores the importance of understanding and enhancing the role of civil society – including national NGOs and refugee-led organizations – in promoting protection and solutions with and for refugees.
Congratulations, Janemary!
