Dick Lake: The Discovery

Dick; A lake with personality Part 1
March 24/2022

About 40 years ago, my wife and I, along with her sister and husband, rented a cottage on 3 Mile Lake in Muskoka. The 4 of us got along very well, and this was the kind of vacation I loved. As expected, we had a wonderful time, but before driving back home we visited a friend of mine who had a new cottage on Little Lake Joseph. I was an emergency physician at a Windsor hospital and got to know many of the specialists. The doc who owned the cottage was a very busy orthopaedic surgeon, outgoing and very friendly. He told me to let him know if I were ever in the area to give him a call. He was very enthusiastic about his lake front cottage, and I think he wanted to show it off a little bit. I took him up on his offer and gave him a call that we were in the area and about to return home. Surprisingly he graciously invited the 4 of us to come for a visit and lunch. A cottage on a lake has always been one of my dreams so I heartedly agreed. It was a bit of a navigational challenge to get there but we made it shortly after noon on a Sunday. As I expected I was very impressed and enjoying myself immensely. Our hosts son, about 10 years old, saw my enthusiasm and asked me if I wanted to see his secret fishing lake. Obviously, I leapt at the opportunity. None of the others were much interested, so the 2 of us, with 1 fishing rod, marched off down the road. After a walk of about 800 meters, I saw a path heading into the woods. My excitement rose as we headed directly toward it. After walking through the woods for about 10 minutes, the scenery opened up and we arrived on a stony outcrop, jutting out into this seemingly untouched lake. I freaked out and muttered “Wow!” numerous times. It really was beautiful. My guide appreciated my excitement, and said he could catch 8 fish or more with 10 casts from where we were standing. He proceeded to demonstrate and his prediction was absolutely spot-on. I was blown away. With very little exploring, I found an old For Sale sign that had fallen from a tree where it had been nailed. This was almost too good to be true. I took the number, and we returned to his family cottage. I could hardly contain my excitement, and couldn’t wait until I could contact the real estate company the next day after the 4 of us had arrived back home. There’s more to come, and the stories just get better.
