We want to celebrate the most important people to the Lifelong Learning Program— YOU!
As we reflect on 2024, we’re grateful for another incredible year of learning, connection, and community with LLeaP! To show our appreciation, we’re excited to invite you to our Participant Appreciation Day on Friday, February 7 2025. Join us for a day of celebration, connection, and engaging activities as we thank you for being part of our vibrant learning community. This event is free to attend; bring a friend or family member and show them all that the Lifelong Learning Program has to offer.
Registration is open now—we can’t wait to see you there!
Partnering with the Unified Support Centre
The Lifelong Learning Program is proud to support the Unified Support Centre and their Emergency Food Hamper program. Food insecurity is a major cause of financial stress and hardship for students at Carleton and the Unified Support Centre works to provide hundreds of baskets to students in need on campus.
We will be collecting non-perishable goods and hygiene products at our Appreciation Day. The USC is constantly in need of the following non-perishable items:
- Canned Soups (non-vegetarian & vegetarian)
- Broth (non-vegetarian & vegetarian)
- Canned Beans (both baked beans and unseasoned)
- Canned Chilli
- Pasta Sauce
- Dry Lentils or Beans
- Rice
- Pasta
- Canned Vegetables
- Toothpaste
- Toothbrushes
- Shampoo
- Floss
- Pads
Please note that they are unable to accept the following items due to food safety concerns and allergy risks:
- Unsealed or partially used donations (i.e. an open box of rice or a punctured bag of pasta)
- Unsealed perishable donations (i.e. a takeout contained from a restaurant)
- Chilled items that have been stored at room temperature
- Expired perishable food and essentials
- Expired non-perishable items that are more than one (1) month past their date of expiration
Schedule
10:00am-11:00am
- Lifelong Learning refreshments
- Carleton University Art Gallery presentation (30 mins; 2 groups)
11:00am-12:00pm
- Message from Janet Mantler, director of the Centre for Initiatives in Education
- Guest lecturer- Dr. Argel Aguilar-Valles: Beyond the Magic of Mushrooms: Using Psychedelic Derivatives to Treat Depression
About the lecturer
Dr. Argel Aguilar-Valles and his lab are interested in the molecular mechanisms that underlie psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. They use a combination of biochemistry, molecular biology, neuronal culture, and animal models to understand how genetic risk factors contribute to mental illness. Here are some of the research questions they are investigating:
- How genetic mutations affect brain development to generate neurodevelopmental disorders
- The molecular and cellular mechanism of action of novel, rapidly-acting antidepressants (ketamine, serotonergic psychedelics, etc.)
