Overview

Interested in understanding sustainability? Come explore the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and gain a deeper understanding of the goals through the eyes of business. Each week, learners will gain knowledge of the several SDGs and examine them in action through two selected business case studies. Learners will be given a chance to make sense of the SDGs and how strategies presented can be applied to other business contexts. In the end, learners will be provided with sustainability strategies that they may implement in their lives that work to address the SDGs and gain a better sense of how the world continues to move forward in the face of climate change and global warming.

Topics

Week 1: Introduction and history of the SDGs

Week 2: Social well-being.

Week 3:  Economic growth and infrastructure.

Week 4:  Environmental sustainability.

Week 5:  Peace, justice and partnerships.

Week 6:  Where do we go from here?

About the Lecturer

Abby is a third-year PhD Student in Management specializing in International Business. After receiving her Bachelor of Commerce in 2022 from Carleton, Abby pursued a Master of Science in Management specializing in Climate Change before fast-tracking into the PhD Program at Carleton. Abby has a deep passion for global sustainability and the fight against climate change after growing up in a mining town and bearing witness to environmental degradation, which drives her to initiate conversations about the SDGs in business. Currently, her dissertation research is focused on climate-change-induced international migration, which works to capture the impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations and the implications of this migration on global workforces and cross-cultural management. She firmly believes that one of the best ways to tackle these grand challenges as individuals is through education and conversation, especially because of the complexity of each goal. Although this is her first course with the Lifelong Learning Program, she hopes to inspire individuals to take action in their own lives to continue to a more sustainable world!
