Going to university was an exciting and anxiety-provoking experience but arriving at Carleton soon changed both. I quickly felt at home among other students who were interested in the many facets of the brain and passionate professors who were eager to teach and speak with their students. What has really stood out to me about Carleton Neuroscience was the way professors look to change and improve the program based on student feedback, as well as the many opportunities to become involved in undergraduate research. Overall I would say that Carleton Neuroscience provides students with many opportunities to become involved in their faculty, and is a great place to explore an interest in the brain!
For students who are just beginning their journey at Carleton now, I would emphasize the importance of getting involved and building a community. While science programs are difficult at times and require a significant time commitment for labs, this can be made easier by working with classmates and helping each other with different aspects of the class according to individual strengths. Having a support network can really keep your from falling down during those difficult time periods like midterms and finals. Getting involved early can also help you learn more about what the faculty does and which professors you would have an interest in working with. Getting involved may sound like a tall order but do not fret, Carleton has many opportunities for undergraduate neuroscience students to become more involved on campus and build connections both in and out of the program. These include events from groups such as: Carleton Neuroscience Society, Science Student Success Center, Carleton Science Student Society, and many others. The earlier, the better!
