Carleton Professor To Host Medical Patient Safety Workshop

April 25, 2018

Carleton University’s Monique Frize, Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, will host an expert workshop on the critical issue of patient safety in medicine. The workshop will include presentations from stakeholders – including physicians, biomedical engineers, administrators and nursing experts – on optimizing patient safety.

When: Thursday, May 3, at 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and May 4, at 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Room 2014, Minto Center for Advanced Studies in Engineering, Carleton University

Media are invited to attend the event.

Patient safety is an extremely important issue. According to a study published in the medical journal The BMJ in 2013, 251,454 patients in the United States died due to medical errors or adverse events – making it the third leading cause of death.

Clinical engineers can play a critical role in minimizing these occurrences. This workshop will bring together experts from Italy and Canada to propose policies and develop a series of recommendations for hospital administrators, physicians and other clinical personnel.

Items for discussion include the challenge of systemically addressing patient safety, identifying and eliminating potential risks, minimizing hazards through technology, and encouraging organizational commitment to safety.
