Jeff Smith to Receive CSMS Young Investigator Award
Carleton University’s Jeff Smith, director of the Carleton Mass Spectrometry Centre, will receive the Canadian Society for Mass Spectrometry (CSMS) Young Investigator Award.
“I’m extremely honoured to be selected for this award,” said Smith. “Canada has always been an international leader in the field of mass spectrometry, driven by excellent researchers from across the country. I’m grateful to my colleagues within the CSMS for considering my contributions to be worthy of this distinction and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the amazing students that I have had the pleasure of supervising and working alongside over the past decade.”
Smith will receive the award at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry conference on June 5, 2018. The award is based on the impact of an individual’s career.
Smith was nominated for this award by the University of Ottawa’s Paul Mayer, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences.
“Smith is a dynamic, innovative, ambitious scientist who continues the long record of mass spectrometry excellence we have in this country,” said Mayer. “He has made several impacts in his young career, from the development of novel analytical methods (TrEnDi) to translating his work into the clinical setting by collaborating with teams from the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. In my mind, there is no one in Canada more deserving of the CSMS Young Investigator’s Award.”
About Jeff Smith
Smith is an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and the Institute of Biochemistry at Carleton. He received his BSc from Trent University in 2000 and earned his PhD at York University in 2005. After three years at the Ottawa Institute of Systems Biology at the University of Ottawa, he joined Carleton in 2008. His research focusses on the use of mass spectrometry to investigate the biomolecular mechanisms of cellular life. Over the past 10 years he has supervised more than 65 students and attracted nearly $2 million in research funding.
