Carleton Philosophy Professor Named CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar
Carleton University Philosophy Prof. Joshua Shepherd has been selected as one of 14 scholars in the esteemed 2019-2021 CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars program.
CIFAR is a Canadian-based global charitable organization focused on addressing questions facing science and humanity. Shepherd has been appointed a scholar in their Azrieli Program in Brain, Mind & Consciousness.
“It’s quite an honour to be a part of the Azrieli Global Scholar program,” says Shepherd. “The fellows in the Brain, Mind & Consciousness project are exemplars for how to do research.
“I can’t wait to interact with them.”
Shepherd was chosen among 217 eligible applications from 37 countries for the coveted spots. His research looks at how parts of the brain, and parts of conscious experience, support and control complex skilled action such as playing the piano, shooting a basketball or performing a ballet dance.
This is only the second time a Carleton University researcher has received this distinction.
“I am absolutely delighted that Joshua Shepherd’s exceptional scholarship has been recognized with this prestigious international honour,” says Pauline Rankin, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. “This fellowship not only acknowledges Prof. Shepherd’s significant research impact at an early stage of his career, but also reinforces the importance and relevance of philosophic inquiry as a lens through which to expand our understanding of human agency.”
The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Program supports early-career researchers through networking and professional skills development. The chosen scholars join CIFAR research programs for two years and collaborate with each other. CIFAR’s community of fellows has included 19 Nobel laureates since its inception and more than 400 researchers from 22 countries.
