Carleton University Art Gallery to Celebrate Opening of Winter 2019 Exhibitions
The Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) will host a celebration in honour of the opening of three winter exhibitions: UPRISING: THE POWER OF MOTHER EARTH – Christi Belcourt – A Retrospective with Isaac Murdoch; Re: Working Together / Re: Travailler ensemble, curated by Heather Anderson and Marie-Hélène Leblanc; and My Mom, kahntinetha Horn, the “Military Mohawk Princess,” curated by Prof. Kahente Horn-Miller.
When: Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., opening remarks take place at 6 p.m.
Where: Carleton University Art Gallery, St. Patrick’s Building, Carleton

UPRISING: THE POWER OF MOTHER EARTH is a national touring exhibition co-produced by Thunder Bay Art Gallery and CUAG. This first career retrospective of Christi Belcourt’s work traces her practice from the early 1990s to the present, and concludes with recent works made collaboratively with Isaac Murdoch. It features more than 30 paintings loaned by private collectors and major public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario and Canadian Museum of History.
Re: Working Together / Re: Travailler ensemble is a co-production by the Gallery of Université du Québec en Outaouais (GUQO) and CUAG. This innovative exhibition explores the power, pleasure and potential of working together, through the work of eight contemporary artists from North America and Europe. CUAG and GUQO will showcase concurrent exhibitions on collaboration in art practice as part of an inter-institutional curatorial experiment working across languages and sharing resources.
My Mom, kahntinetha Horn, the “Military Mohawk Princess” is curated by Horn-Miller, her daughter and a professor in the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies at Carleton. kahntinetha Horn is a well-known advocate for the rights of Indigenous peoples. The exhibition features photographs, press clippings and archival documents that explore her activism and celebrity during the 1960s.
