Carleton Engineering Professor Becomes National Fellow

Carleton University Engineering Prof. Halim Yanikomeroglu was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) as a fellow on June 21, 2019.
“I am honoured and humbled to be inducted as a fellow of such a distinguished scholarly society,” says Yanikomeroglu, the ninth Carleton researcher to become a CAE fellow.
A world-renowned academic, inventor and researcher in wireless communications, Yanikomeroglu has collaborated with Canadian and international industry partners on 4G and 5G wireless networks. These collaborations have resulted in 30 granted patents in key technologies.
A professor in the Dept. of Systems and Computer Engineering, Yanikomeroglu is best-known for his visionary and pioneering work on relaying technology, which resulted in several seminal publications with thousands of citations. This technology was adopted in various standards, including 4G LTE and 5G.
“This recognition by the CAE reflects the notable impact Halim has had as a top international leader in wireless systems and 5G technology research,” says Rafik Goubran, Carleton’s vice-president (Research and International).
According to the ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019, Carleton ranks No. 33 worldwide in telecommunications engineering.
“Research conducted at Carleton had impact in the 4G LTE standardization,” says Yanikomeroglu. “One of the largest and most impactful pre-standards 5G research projects took place solely at Carleton University from 2012 to 2016, funded by the Ontario government and industry.
“Now, Carleton is getting ready to play a significant role in pre-standards 6G research, which is expected to be one of the most active research areas in information and communications technologies over the next decade.”
It has been quite a year for Yanikomeroglu. He also became a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, received the IEEE Communications Society Wireless Communications Technical Committee Recognition Award, and was elected as chair of the steering committee of the IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, a leading international conference in wireless domain.
The CAE is an independent, self-governing, non-profit organization established in 1987. Members are nominated and elected by their peers to honourary fellowships in view of their distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession.
