Government Announces New Tuition Framework, Student Choice Initiative and Changes to OSAP

January 17, 2019

The Government of Ontario has announced a new tuition framework for colleges and universities that will see tuition fee levels reduced by 10 per cent in 2019-20, relative to 2018-19 levels. Under the new framework, tuition fees will be frozen in 2020-21 at the same level as the 2019-20 tuition.

The government also announced a new approach to student fees. Under the “Student Choice Initiative,” students will be given more leeway about which fees they chose to pay, but fees for essential services will remain mandatory.

Changes have also been introduced to the OSAP program.

Previously, the province has stated all sectors will need to make economic sacrifices. At Carleton, we remain committed to operate as cost-effectively as possible.

The university’s priorities will continue to focus on our students, including measures that can increase access to post-secondary education and services that enrich the experience for all students and supports their success. Carleton will adjust its budget with the goal to minimize possible impacts on our academic mission.

Details about each program have only just been received and will be analyzed in the coming weeks.
