According to Re$earch Infosource, Carleton’s external research income has reached $86 million in 2020, up from $54 million in 2017; an increase of over 60 per cent.

“We can take tremendous pride in the sharp growth in our research funding and the world-class research it supports,” said Carleton President and Vice-Chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon.

“We are tackling real-world challenges and, together with our partners, we are making our country and the world a better place.”

Notably, corporate research income grew by more than 140 per cent over the past year, ranking it as the top Canadian comprehensive university for growth in this category.

These positive results are supported by a growing number of partnerships, including the Ericsson-Carleton University Partnership for Research and Leadership in 5G Wireless Networks. The initiative establishes a state-of-the-art, 5G-enabled research lab, over a dozen faculty-led research projects and fully sponsored master’s and PhD research fellows, as well as an Ericsson Chair in 5G Wireless Research to explore solutions to the real-world application challenges of 5G.

Each year, Re$earch Infosource, an independent research and consulting firm focused on Canadian research and development, ranks Canada’s most research-intensive universities. The most recent results are for funding received in the 2019–20 fiscal year.

Carleton’s ongoing focus on collaborative research with major social, environmental and economic impact has earned international recognition. Carleton researchers continue to work closely with community and industry partners on innovative solutions to some of society’s most complex and pressing challenges.
