Carieta Thomas

Headshot of Carieta Thomas

Assistant Professor

Carieta Thomas is an Assistant Professor in Anti-Black racism within the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Thomas started at Carleton in fall 2023 after completing a PhD in Sociology at the University of Calgary.

Her doctoral research connected her immigration law background and Pan-African critical perspective on race with the sociology of care work. It used intersectionality theory to compare how surveillance in the form of pre-employment screening impacts the lives and employment choices of undocumented Caribbean women care workers in Canada and the U.S. within a context of increased immigrant surveillance and nativism. Her research and service centres around Black immigrants, who are underrepresented in immigration scholarship and policy.

Her teaching and mentoring approach is informed by a long history of Black feminist ideals that see teaching as a liberatory practice that not only imparts knowledge but teaches students how critically engage with the issues of the wider world.

She is currently accepting graduate students interested in the fields of international migration, race and ethnicity, gender, sociology of labour, intersectionality theory and methods, and socio-legal studies.
