Carleton’s Julian Smith Named to Order of Canada
Julian Smith, a Carleton University adjunct research professor, was named a Member of the Order of Canada by Gov. Gen. Julie Payette at an investiture ceremony at Ottawa’s Rideau Hall on Sept. 6.
Smith, who is associated with Carleton’s School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies, is the principal of Julian Smith & Associates, Architects based in Huntsville, Ont.
He is “one of Canada’s leading heritage architects and planners,” according to the citation from the ceremony, and “has helped ensure our most iconic monuments and cultural landscapes are preserved for generations to come.
“As chief restoration architect at Parks Canada, he was instrumental in establishing a program to protect federally owned heritage buildings. He has overseen the conservation of a wide variety of cultural sites both at home and abroad, and has served as a heritage adviser to UNESCO.”
Eight officers and 31 members were named to the Order of Canada at the event. Created in 1967, Canada’s centennial year, the honour recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
To date, nearly 7,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order, including Carleton physicist David Sinclair, a distinguished research professor who became a Member of the Order of Canada in 2017 — one of 20 members of the Carleton community who have been recognized in this way.
