Carleton University's Raven Magazine Wins International Award
Carleton University’s Raven magazine—a showcase for stories about the important, impactful and inspiring work of Carleton faculty, students, staff, alumni and the university’s community partners—has won a Silver in the Magazines Alumni/General Interest 2x Per Year category at the CASE (Council for Advancement and Support in Education) Circle of Excellence awards.
“Very impressive inaugural magazine,” the judges said about Raven, which is produced by Carleton’s Department of University Communications with support from the Office of the President, and published its first two issues in 2020.
“A well-executed design resulted in a visually compelling and sophisticated look and feel.
“Tackles some fascinating story ideas with exceptional rapportage. First-person storytelling from a mix of community voices, including faculty and students, was very impactful. Undertaken with a relatively modest budget, and a lot of creative freedom, to great success.”

Raven is a print publication with companion digital content aimed at thought leaders and decision-makers in government, business, education and the non-profit sector, and other influential members of the Carleton, Ottawa and national communities. Its next issue is expected in early 2022.
“In the pages that follow, you will read about members of the Carleton community who are working to improve energy efficiency, share Indigenous stories, support refugees, advocate for health and wellness, safeguard our water and wildlife, alleviate the opioid crisis and much, much more,” Carleton President Benoit-Antoine Bacon wrote in the debut issue.
“In many of these articles, students, professors and alumni are speaking directly to you in either first-person or as-told-to format. We wanted their voices to be front and centre in the inaugural issue of Raven. They make our university great, and this is their magazine.
“In today’s era of digital overload and fake news, launching a print publication is an act of countercultural resistance. It carries the insistence that these words and pictures are real, meaningful and lasting—that these stories matter.”

CASE is a global, U.S.-based non-profit association dedicated to educational advancement—alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and advancement services—and championing education to transform lives and society.
