Private foundations contribute to the public good, but they’re under considerable scrutiny now. In 2018 (the last year of data publicly available), 6,000 foundations controlled about $56 billion in assets in Canada. They distribute grants to organizations in nearly every sector of society. Many foundations seek to have greater impacts; many aren’t sure how to be more effective; and many aren’t yet trying very hard to do so.
