Dear Colleagues,

This is the first week of Carleton University’s Equity Census Campaign! Our goal is to achieve a campus employee response rate of 90 per cent by October 2019! Filling in the census survey is easy and only requires a minute to finish.

As a director or manager, your personal commitment to the campaign will engage your direct reports around the importance of the survey, further operationalize our values, and provide immediate inspiration for employee action. If new members have joined your team since 2014 and have not completed their equity census yet, please refer them to the email with the subject: “Open Call to all Faculty and Staff – Join the Equity Census Campaign” containing a customized link to their survey. Your efforts to directly encourage the people with whom you work every day will be an invaluable contribution to the university’s efforts.

Accurate census results are critical to the university’s ability to assess our progress towards eliminating barriers and removing conditions of disadvantage in employment. In addition, completing the survey furthers Carleton’s efforts to recruit and attract the broadest spectrum of expertise, knowledge and experience necessary to promote the best decision-making, and accelerate the kinds of research, teaching, and work excellence that drives the academic mission.

The census is also a condition of eligibility for federal funds under the Federal Contractors Program. In September 2019, program representatives will begin a routine compliance assessment of the university’s obligations. This is an opportunity for us to demonstrate strong institutional commitment.

Recently, Carleton reaffirmed its leadership intent in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) by endorsing the NSERC Dimensions Program Charter. The Charter sets out principles designed to achieve greater research excellence, innovation and creativity in higher education through EDI: http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/NSERC-CRSNG/EDI-EDI/Dimensions_Dimensions_eng.asp.
Carleton’s Employee Equity Census Task Force, which included representatives of unionized and non-unionized employee groups on campus, developed and endorsed the census package. Equity Services and Institutional Research and Planning are jointly responsible for collecting census information and producing the necessary statistical reports. Please see the Code of Confidentiality which outlines the safeguards that have been developed to protect the information you provide.

The census form may be filled out during working hours. Further information on the census is contained in the frequently asked questions. The census is voluntary and we encourage all regular part-time and continuing full-time employees to complete it. If you prefer not to provide information, you have the option of opening the survey and simply click the next button to skip through all the questions and record your census as blank.

If you or your employees have any technical problems submitting the census, please email Tyler Hall in the Office of Institutional Research and Planning at tyler.hall@carleton.ca. For any questions or concerns about the census, please contact Michael Charles, University Advisor on Equity by telephone at extension 1361 or email at MichaelCharles3@carleton.ca. You may also contact your union/employee representative to discuss any concerns you might have.

Thank you in advance for taking part in this important Equity Census,
