National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Dear members of the Carleton community,

Each year on December 6, Carleton University observes the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day commemorates the brutal killing of 14 women who were victims of a horrific act of gender-based violence in a mechanical engineering classroom at École Polytechnique de Montréal. An annual event on campus, hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Design, honours their memory and those who have experienced gender-based violence.

Today’s ceremony invites us to reflect on the impacts of gender-based violence, however, it also reminds us that violence and harassment, in their many forms, remain deeply entrenched in our society. Our community must work to eradicate all forms of hate and to ensure everyone receives dignity, respect and understanding.

For resources and support offered by Carleton, visit our 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence webpage.

Sincerely,

Jerry
