SAR committee member Shuchi Karim has just published an article on the LGBTQI+ movement in Bangladesh titled: “Politics of identities: Problematics of categories, labels and languages in LGBTQI+ movement in Bangladesh.” The chapter is in Gender, Sexuality and Social Justice: Unpacking Dominant Development and Policy Discourses (Routledge, 2024), edited by Silke Heumann, and Camilo Antillón Najlis.

Dr. Karim has been a member of SAR Carleton since January 2021, when she served as a visiting professor in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology. Prior to that she was taught at Western University in London, ON, and prior to that was a Research Fellow at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University of Rotterdam, The Hague. She is currently serving as a Project Director of the IDRC-funded initiative Placement, Preservation and Perseverance: Afghan At-risk Scholars, Activists and Students’ Project at Carleton University.

Dr. Karim’s research areas include gender and sexuality, sexual and reproductive health rights, transnational feminism, etc. Karim is a passionate advocate for scholar activism and academic freedom.
