Part-time Student Videographer

Carleton University’s Digital Communications team is seeking a creative, organized, and trend-aware student videographer to support the production of high-quality video content for our flag-ship social media channels and other projects. This role includes filming on campus, editing short-form and long-form videos, preparing assets for multiple platforms, and collaborating closely with our digital team to bring stories to life.
This position is ideal for students looking to build a strong professional portfolio in social media storytelling, digital media production, and content creation within a fast-paced communications environment.
Responsibilities

Creative Development
- Contribute to ideation of social media concepts, storyframes, and content series.
- Identify emerging video trends and recommend relevant creative approaches.
- Select appropriate visuals from internal asset libraries or produce relevant imagery.
Video Production & Editing
- Capture on-campus footage including interviews, b-roll, events, and student activities.
- Assist in setup and takedown of production equipment (lighting, audio, tripods, gimbals).
- Conduct basic lighting and audio capture during filming sessions.
- Help make on-camera talent comfortable and confident during interviews or shoots.
- Build compelling stories with strong pacing, engaging hooks, and polished endings.
- Edit short-form and long-form videos for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and other platforms.
- Add text overlays, captions, transitions, motion elements, music, and light graphics.
- Format and export videos across multiple aspect ratios (16:9, 9:16, 1:1).
- Optimize outputs for each platform, including thumbnails and metadata.
- Ensure accessibility (e.g., subtitles) and alignment with Carleton’s brand guidelines.
Required Skills and Experience
- Current Carleton University student (all programs welcome).
- Experience editing video content (coursework, freelance, personal projects, clubs, etc.).
- Experience using DSLR/mirrorless cameras or mobile video setups for videography and photography.
- Proficiency in professional video editing software such as Davinci Resolve or Premiere Pro (or ability to learn quickly with existing editing experience).

- Strong sense of storytelling, pacing, audio balance, and visual clarity.
- Basic understanding of lighting techniques and wireless audio equipment.
- Familiarity with Canva or Adobe Photoshop for creating thumbnails.
- Comfortable using YouTube Studio, Instagram Reels editor, Edits, or CapCut.
- Excellent time management and reliability; able to meet deadlines in a hybrid workflow.Strong communication skills and openness to feedback in a collaborative environment.
- Professional judgment and discretion when working with university content.
- Basic motion graphics familiarity (e.g., templates, After Effects) is a bonus.
Portfolio Requirement
Applicants will be required to submit a link to a portfolio which includes a sampling of videography and photography with a description for each submitted item indicating the levels of involvement (e.g. videographer, editor, director, etc.).
Work Environment
- $25 an hour, 16 hour weeks for the term (approx 15 weeks).
- Flexibility for school work and exams.
- Provision of professional cameras, audio gear, stabilizers, lighting, and storage. Students may use their own editing stations if preferred.
- Hybrid work: some weekly in-office hours + flexible editing time + on-site filming. Work occasional evenings or weekends with advance notice.
- Desk space in a professional marketing & communications office with opportunities to network and job shadow.
