Workshop in Research Methods

In February 2024, project members gathered at the International Library of African Music (ILAM) for a two-day workshop in ethnographic and archival research methods. The workshop was led by Dr. Lee Watkins, Dr. Elijah Madiba, and Mr. Praise Khalanga of Rhodes University. Participants included Mr. James Mapanka, Mr. Leonard Gewers, Mr. Laurencius Veldskoen, Mr. Abraham Katimba, Ms. Sarah Titties, and Dr. Sharon Gabie. Workshop activities included a tour of ILAM’s archival equipment, demonstration of archival digitization processes; hands-on experience of archival equipment and digitization; instruction in field recording technologies; and instruction in field research methods such as interviews, consent forms, and data dissemination.
