photo of Ed Broadbent, with caption 1936-2024The School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA) is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Ed Broadbent. A Visiting Fellow with our undergraduate counterpart the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs from 1999 to 2004, Ed was also an instructor during this time with SPPA.

Over the years, he has continued to be an inspiring presence, and most recently joined our PhD class in April 2023 as a special guest, engaging our students in a frank discussion on Canadian political institutions and decision-making.  “His passion for education and policy was evident in his rapport with our students” says Jennifer Stewart, Director, SPPA.

Ed was a close collaborator with SPPA Distinguished Research Professor Frances Abele, who was a co-author on his memoir publication Seeking Social Democracy: Seven Decades in the Fight for Equality.

We are fortunate and grateful for Ed Broadbent’s contributions to our School over the years, and for his contributions and dedication to Canada and all Canadians.  This is a great loss.  We extend our deepest condolences to all his family, friends and colleagues.
