Iain McKinnell

Iain McKinnell has been working as an instructor in the Department of Biology & Institute of Biochemistry at Carleton since 2010. Since joining the department, he has developed a host of new courses in the areas of human anatomy & physiology, exercise physiology, and embryology, introducing new student opportunities for teaching and research at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

When not in the classroom he devotes much of his time to developing innovative pedagogical tools and approaches for course delivery, including the use of human plastinates and game-based apps for learning anatomy, and the development of high-quality online content for his introductory level classes. In addition, Iain also contributes to the scholarship of teaching and learning through faculty-based communities and student-led projects.

Iain’s impact on teaching and learning at Carleton has been recognized with a number of awards including the 2012 Faculty of Science Excellence in Teaching awards, a Professional Achievement Award in 2015, Teaching Achievement Award in 2017, and most recently his efforts were rewarded with a 2023 Provost’s Fellowship in Teaching Award.
