Jesse Stewart
Award-winning composer and educator Jesse Stewart has led an extraordinarily successful life. Since joining the School for Studies in Art and Culture in 2008, Jesse has shared and instilled his passion for music composition, jazz history, musical and social justice, as well as popular music studies with each student that walks through his classroom door. Students frequently speak of Jesse’s innovative and passionate approach to music, citing him as one of the most engaging educators on campus.
As an active performer and composer, Jesse has also written and performed music that explores extended playing techniques, and has done so with numerous musical luminaries. In 2012, he was honoured with the Instrumental Album of the Year Juno award for his work with Stretch Orchestra.
His compassion and generosity has also been recognized with a Terry Fox Humanitarian Award, for his dedication to building and strengthening communities through arts education and outreach.
Adding to the long list of recognitions, he is also the recipient of the 2013 Marston LaFrance Research Fellowship, the Carleton University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences’ Senior Award, a 2014 FASS Teaching Achievement Award, and a 2015 Carleton University Teaching Achievement Award. In 2017, he added an international Desire2Learn Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning to his already impressive repertoire. Most recently, he has been named a winner of the 2022 Provost’s Fellowship in Teaching Award for his innovative and passionate approach to teaching.
