The Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) welcomes you to a celebration of four new exhibitions: “We Are Continually Exposed to the Flashbulb of Death: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg (1953-1996), TRANSACTIONS, Patricia Reed: The One and the Many and genderhow?
When: Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Where: Carleton University Art Gallery, St. Patrick’s Building, 1125 Colonel By Drive.
Who: A performance by Kama La Mackerel will take place following introductory remarks at 6:00 p.m. Artists Patricia Reed, Kalkidan Assefa, Kama La Mackerel and Jennifer Dickson will attend.
“Embracing photography, video, social media, street art and digital production, the artists in CUAG’s fall exhibitions explore how our senses of self and belonging are shaped by the categories we construct to `organize’ the world, ” said Sandra Dyck, director of the gallery. “These categories span the personal and political, drawn along lines including gender and sexuality, countries and citizenship.”

This major survey presents Allen Ginsberg’s spontaneous, uninhibited snapshots of the legendary Beat Generation of American writers, and of ordinary events that reflect what he called “the sacredness of the moment.” The qualities so evident in Ginsberg’s poetry—intense observation of the world, appreciation for the beauty of the everyday, and faith in intuitive expression—also permeate his photographs. With their handwritten captions, which often reflect on the passage of time, Ginsberg’s photographs are both records and recollections of an era.

Using familiar representations of the nation state—including anthems, flags, and currencies—Patricia Reed’s works highlight the logics under which our world is ordered. The Ottawa-born, Berlin-based artist amplifies and recomposes these sources in drawing, video, audio, and book works, which propose alternative models of belonging and systems of exchange, founded upon what unites us, rather than what divides us.

Featuring photographs and video works selected from CUAG’s collection, genderhow? exposes and critiques conventional notions of how masculinities and femininities are embodied and performed. The works of these artists encourage us to grapple with the “hows” of gender: how we take particular notions of gender for granted as “natural,” and how we learn, express, and play with gender.
