East Africa: Refugee Law Project in Uganda
The Refugee Law Project (RLP) of Makerere University’s school of law was established in 1999, initiated by Dr Barbara Harrell-Bond, after conducting research on the extent to which refugees enjoy their rights in exile in Kenya and Uganda, currently host to the third largest refugee population in the world. Its mission is to empower asylum seekers, refugees, deportees, IDPs and host communities to enjoy their human rights and lead dignified lives. RLP delivers its mandate through five thematic programmes namely Access to Justice for Forced Migrants, Conflict, Transitional Justice & Governance, Gender and Sexuality, Media For Social Change, as well as Mental Health & Psychosocial Wellbeing.
Its director, Dr Pius Ojara serves as the regional coordinator for AIReKEMA.
West Africa: Centre for Migration Studies at the University of Ghana
Established in November 2006 and officially launched in November 2007, the Centre for Migration Studies (CMS) at the University of Ghana serves as a pioneering hub for research, teaching, training, capacity building, and policy development in the field of migration. As the only academic centre of its kind in the West African sub-region, CMS has emerged as a regional leader in migration studies, promoting interdisciplinary engagement and academic excellence. The center’s mission is to serve as a leading Centre for the study of contemporary and future migration dynamics within and outside Ghana through a strategic and integrated approach. Dr Mary Setrana Boatemaa, the director of the center will serve as the regional hub coordinator for AIReKEMA.
Southern Africa: the University of Zululand in South Africa
Founded in 1960 as The University College of Zululand, it has now evolved to become a comprehensive university offering approximately 252 accredited degrees, diploma and certificate courses across faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, Science, Agriculture and Engineering, commerce, Administration and Law.
