The Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management (BPAPM) program is proud to announce that two alumni and one current student won elections at the municipal level on Election Night 2018.
Current student Cameron Wales, 23, won as a city councillor in the City of Brockville, garnering the largest number of votes among any of those running. According to an article in The Recorder & Times of Brockville, Wales campaigned on themes of growth and stewardship.
“I want to see Brockville grow,” he told the paper. “To do that, we have to make sure we’re taking care of the people who are here, the infrastructure that’s here.”
Meanwhile, alumnus Matt Luloff, who graduated from BPAPM in 2013 with a specialization in social policy, defeated 16 other candidates in the Orléans ward of Ottawa. The Canadian Forces veteran promised to advocate for mental health and the arts.
“I know I didn’t get everybody’s vote and I know that this isn’t a gigantic mandate, and I’m going to work very hard to earn everybody’s trust,” he told the Ottawa Citizen.
In Toronto, 34-year-old Joe Cressy, a 2007 BPAPM alumnus with a specialization in development studies, was re-elected in a landslide. In his first four years, he had advocated for safe-injection sites, bicycle lanes and streetcar service.
According to The Toronto Star, he told supporters, “We are a movement that will fight for those who are left out.”
The BPAPM program also has two alumni serving as Members of Parliament: John Nater (Perth—Wellington) and Garnett Genus (Sherwood—Fort Saskatchewan).
