The Email tool allows TAs to communicate with students directly in D2L Brightspace. The email tool in Brightspace is an outbox for your Carleton email. This means that any replies will come directly to your CMAIL account, accessed through Outlook. The email tool is available in the mini navbar, the Classlist and the Groups tool. Carleton delivers email for faculty, students, and staff using the Microsoft Office 365 suite.

Accessing Email

  1. Log in to Brightspace with your MyCarletonOne credentials.
  2. On the Brightspace homepage, locate your course in one of the following ways:
      • Click on the course tile under the My Courses widget.
      • Click the Course Selector Grid  and select the course from the drop-down menu. If you are enrolled in more than 20 courses, you can search for the course name using the search bar.
  3. In the navbar, click the Mail icon .
  4. Click Email.
  5. In To, type the email address you are sending the message to.
    1. Alternatively, click Address Book to add recipients from your Address Book. Depending on your course settings, this Address Book may automatically include your classmates.
    2. Click the select box next to the name(s) you wish to email.
    3. Click the blue To, Cc or Bcc buttons located directly above the list of names to add the selected recipients in the To, Cc or Bcc recipient areas. The names will be added in the appropriate recipients area. Select additional recipients to add to another area if needed.
      NOTE: When Emailing multiple students, it is recommended to put student addresses in the Bcc section to maintain student privacy.
  6. Click Add Recipients. This will close the Add recipients pop-up and input the addresses in the appropriate recipient area on the email.
  7. Type a subject for the email in the Subject box.
  8. Type the email message in the Body textbox. Use the HTML editor to add photos, videos or links.
  9. To add an attachment, click Upload in the Attachments box. Locate the file on your computer and click Open.
  10. Click Send.

Emailing from the Classlist

  1. Log in to Brightspace with your MyCarletonOne credentials.

      • Click on the course tile under the My Courses widget.
      • Click the Course Selector Grid  and select the course from the drop-down menu. If you are enrolled in more than 20 courses, you can search for the course name using the search bar.
  3. In the navbar, click Tools.
  4. Click Classlist. You can send an email in the following ways:
    • To send an email to the entire classlist:
      1. Click Email Classlist
      2. Type a subject in the Subject box.
      3. Type the email message in the Body textbox. Use the HTML editor to add photos, videos or links.
      4. To add an attachment, click Upload in the Attachments box. Locate the file on your computer and click Open.
      5. Click Send.
        NOTE: Brightspace will automatically place all emails in the Bcc column. It is recommended to keep email addresses in the Bcc column to maintain student privacy.
    • To email only certain class members:
      1. Click the selectbox next to their names, then click Email.
      2. Type a subject in the Subject box.
      3. Type the email message in the Body textbox. Use the HTML editor to add photos, videos or links.
      4. To add an attachment, click Upload in the Attachments box. Locate the file on your computer and click Open.
      5. Click Send.

Emailing a Group

  1. Log in to Brightspace with your MyCarletonOne credentials.
  2. On the Brightspace homepage, locate your course in one of the following ways:
      • Click on the course tile under the My Courses widget.
      • Click the Course Selector Grid  and select the course from the drop-down menu. If you are enrolled in more than 20 courses, you can search for the course name using the search bar.
  3. In the navbar, click Tools.
  4. Select Groups.
  5. Under View Categories, select the category name you want to email.
  6. Click the selectbox next to the group names you want to email and click Email. If you would like to email all groups in the selected category click the selectbox next to the Category title (e.g., Discussion groups) and click Email.
  7. Type a subject in the Subject box.
  8. Type the email message in the Body textbox. Use the HTML editor to add photos, videos or links.
  9. To add an attachment, click Upload in the Attachments box. Locate the file on your computer and click Open.
  10. Click Send.
NOTE: Brightspace will automatically place all emails in the Bcc column. It is recommended to keep email addresses in the Bcc column to maintain student privacy.
