Professor Simms awarded Collaborative Research and Development Grant

Professor Simms was recently awarded a $180,000 Collaborative Research and Development Grant on Thickened Tailings Technology. Tailings, the waste product of both hard rock mining and oil sands extraction, are in Canada generated at a rate in the billions of tonnes per year, and tailings impoundments cover thousands of square kilometres in Canada. Thickened Tailings Technology will facilitate the rapid reclamation of tailings impoundments and restoration of their footprint to its original environment, and also has the potential to substantially reduces water consumption and pollution in the mining industry.
