Orgaworld Sponsors Waste Management Awards
Orgaworld Canada Limited recently sponsored an Award of Distinction for the top student as well as an Award of Excellence for the top two term projects for ENVE 4101 Waste Management at Carleton University. The awards were handed out at a recent presentation ceremony hosted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and attended by Dr. Paul Van Geel, Dr. Greg Mariotti, Dr. Mustafa Ahmed and Ms. Dina Megalla.
The Orgaworld Canada Limited Award of Distinction for Top Student was presented to James Doyle. The Orgaworld Canada Limited Award of Excellence was presented to students with top term project rankings. This year’s term project topic was “Development of a Methodological Framework to Maximize the Domestic Waste Recycling in Apartment Buildings”. The project groups presented case studies from Canada, USA, Germany, England, Japan and Singapore. Then, they developed a methodological framework to be applied for a city in a developing country (Egypt, Morocco, Bangladesh or Philippines). The Term Project Awards were presented to: Lindsay Cook, Janette Bass, Erqin Zeng, Sebastian Traczyk, Malcolm Beamish, Peter Hutchins, Tiia Merikallio, Alex Massis, and Amina Hussein.
Dr. Paul Van Geel praised the students for a job well done and thanked Orgaworld for sponsoring the awards; “It is great to have Orgaworld as a sponsor of the student projects in Waste Management. Having an industry partner involved and allowing our students to tour Orgaworld’s facilities reinforces the fact that the students are working on solutions to real world problems”.
The award certificates and cash prizes were presented by Dr. Greg Mariotti, Manager of Operations at Orgaworld Canada. Dr. Mariotti said: “The great ideas that came from the projects are testament to the enthusiasm shown by the students”. Orgaworld Canada Limited will sign agreement with Carleton University to be a long term sponsor for the ENVE 4101 waste management award.

The ENVE 4101 course provides students with a comprehensive background in waste management and includes topics such as the logistics of waste, landfill operations, hazardous waste management, and design of composting facilities, waste to energy and mine waste.
