Carleton hosts student workshop on What Makes Existing Buildings Green?
The student symposium is intended to stimulate discussion between students of various disciplines related to sustainability, heritage, and conservation practice in a collaborative environment. Discussion will follow a lecture given by architect and author Jean Carroon regarding preservation and sustainable design.
- Understand the various sustainable practices that can be applied to heritage buildings. Briefly analyze the technology behind these practices and their effectiveness
- Recognize the conservation of heritage buildings as a sustainable practice
- Consider the environmental impact of creating and conserving durable buildings over creating new “efficient” buildings
- Understand the role of materiality in the conservation of heritage buildings, the sustainability and the embodied energy
- The sustainability of cultural landscapes through conservation
