There is nothing like a good hike after a good conference! (From left to right: Audrey Murray, Natalie Linklater and Prof. Banu Ormeci).

Linklater had the first place and Murray had the second place in the competition for the Philip H. Jones Awards, which are awarded to students with the best research presentations. The award comes with a cash prize of $300 for first place and $200 for second place, a one-year membership in the Canadian Association on Water Quality, and an invitation to submit the student’s work to the Water Quality Research Journal of Canada. The National Water and Wastewater Conference is co-organized by the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA) and the Canadian Association on Water Quality (CAWQ), and is the largest water and wastewater conference in Canada that brings together all of the key players including utility managers, consultants, government officials and academics to discuss all aspects of water and wastewater management.

Both grad students work under the supervision of Prof. Banu Ormeci who is a Canada Research Chair in Wastewater Treatment Engineering in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Natalie’s research investigates the effectiveness of new generation disinfectants using advanced molecular methods and Audrey’s research focuses on the removal of emerging contaminants and heavy metals from wastewater using non-imprinted polymers.
