Banu Ormeci has been awarded one of two Strategic Project Grants given to Carleton University from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Örmeci, a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will receive $277,000 for her work developing optimization and automation systems for sludge treatment processes. The cost of biosolids treatment is approximately half of the cost of wastewater treatment. The ultimate goal of this research is to optimize sludge treatment processes, improving their performance while reducing costs and the environmental impacts.

Strategic Project Grants aim to increase research and training in targeted areas that could strongly enhance Canada’s economy, society and/or the environment within the next 10 years.
