Courtney Berquist received the Halliday scholarship, awarded by the Ontario Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) to students studying and undertaking research in disciplines related to solid waste disposal and environmental protection. The scholarship is in memory of Michael Halliday, the Director of Landfill Operations for Laidlaw Waste Systems Ltd. Berquist, along with graduate student Robert McDonald, is currently working on a project to optimize waste stabilization in northern climates funded by Waste Management Canada, Golder Associates, WSP and BluMetric Environmental.
