Professor Sherwood received the Jim Simpson Award

Professor Ted Sherwood was nominated by the Concrete Canoe Design Team and was awarded the Jim Simpson Award by the Carleton Student Engineering Society during their annual gala. The said award recognizes outstanding contributions to student life and success by a staff member.

The members of the Concrete Canoe Design Team, which Professor Sherwood supervises, nominated him for the award because he has been the cornerstone of getting the team off the ground and racing. Below is a statement from Meg Suchon, current Captain of the Carleton Concrete Canoe Design Team.

“[Professor Sherwood] has given us the confidence to not only try breaking into such a long-standing competition but continuously reminds us that our experimentation, even if it leads to failure, is still something to learn from.  Without his support and guidance, we would not have been able to get as far in the design process as we did before the Covid-19 Pandemic shut down in early January that unfortunately pulled us out of this year’s national competition. Several students on the team including myself have been in Ted’s classes and wanted to get the same passion and energy he brings to his lectures on to the team. That passion is what is bringing, not only myself, back as captain, but several other design team members to see this boat float in 2023. “
