Biography

Luminita (Lumi) Dumitrascu is a Research Associate at the National Research Council of Canada (Construction Research Centre, Integrated Building Performance Group). She provides research support for building code development (energy efficiency tiers and greenhouse gas emissions levels) for Part 9 (residential buildings) of the National Building Code of Canada. She is involved, as well, in various other research projects and studies targeting the decarbonization of the built environment.  In April 2023, Lumi completed her PhD studies in Mechanical Engineering at Carleton University. Her research focus was on the modeling, optimization, and thermal performance of a building integrated sub-slab thermal storage system for coupling to a heat pump. Prior to moving to Canada, in 2010, she completed a degree in Conventional Power Generation Engineering at the Politehnica University of Bucharest, and worked as an engineer in Romania.

Lumi published and presented her research work to journals and conferences relevant to the building performance simulation field (Journal of Building Performance Simulation, Science and Technology for the Built Environment, Canadian and International Building Simulation Conferences, and ASHRAE Annual Conferences). During her seven-year period as a graduate student at Carleton University she was a Teaching Assistant for the following undergraduate courses: MECH 4907 – Capstone Design Project; MAAE 3300 – Fluid Mechanics 2; MECH 4403 – Power Generation Systems; ECOR 4995: Professional Practice; ECOR 1010 – Introduction to Engineering. During this time, following her passion for teaching, she obtained from the Educational Development Centre the Teaching Assistant Skills Certificate, and Preparing to Teach Certificate. Additionally, Lumi was the recipient of various awards from the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineering, International Building Performance Simulation Association, Borealis Foundation, and other organizations.
