Prof. Kim is an interdisciplinary scientist studying infrastructure systems, urban ecohydrology, stormwater management, and institutional governance for sustainable urban futures influenced by resilience theory, civil and environmental engineering, and systems science. Her research investigates ways to mitigate the impact of urban flooding and its consequences by integrating resilient and “safe-to-fail” infrastructure system design. She links hydrologic models, infrastructure vulnerability analysis, decision support tools, and participatory workshops to improve infrastructure design and development strategies for systems-level urban water management. Furthermore, she studies how governance in diverse socio-cultural and biophysical contexts addresses climate extremes, the dynamics of social-ecological-technological systems (SETS) tackling hydrological risks in cities, and knowledge co-production approaches for institutional climate adaptation planning and community-based capacity building for urban resilience to extreme weather events.

Graduate Student Research Opportunities

Urban resilience to extreme events, adapting to hydrologic risks in cities, the confluence of rapid urbanization with inadequate, aging, or non-existent infrastructure, and loss of ecosystem services as cities expand – all are challenges requiring interdisciplinary approach in order to ensure long-term sustainability of urban environment. Dr. Kim is currently accepting MASc and PhD students who are interested in interdisciplinary research converging civil and environmental engineering, ecohydrology, urban planning, and sustainability science. Interested students should email a CV and a brief research interest description to yeowon.kim@carleton.ca to discuss potential research and funding opportunities.
