Thesis Requirements
For information on programs, thesis requirements and thesis weighting for your individual program, please speak to your graduate supervisor and the graduate administrator of your department. It is important that you review the thesis requirements on the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs website.
Thesis Committee
A thesis supervisor may propose an examination board, which must be approved by the Chair of the Department. The examination board must include, as a minimum, the following examiners:
For Master’s Thesis Committee
- Thesis supervisor (or co-supervisors)
- Institute Examiner: One member from the University of Ottawa
- One additional member from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
- Chair of the department
- Dean of the faculty (ex officio)
- Dean of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Affairs (ex officio)
For Doctoral Thesis Committee
- Thesis Supervisor (or co-supervisors)
- External Examiner: One member who is from outside the University, and who is a recognized scholar or authority in the subject of the thesis
- Internal examiner: One member from a department other than the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
- Institute Examiner: One member from the University of Ottawa
- At least one thesis advisory committee member. If no thesis advisory committee has been established, one departmental member may be appointed.
- Chair of the department concerned (ex officio)
- Dean of the faculty concerned (ex officio)
- Dean of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Affairs (or his/her deputy) (Chair of the Examining Board)
Thesis Timeline
The time frames are based on the guidelines proposed by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, and if adhered to, will greatly simplify the scheduling of the thesis examinations.
