This Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page is for students from outside of Canada who want to conduct a research visit at Carleton University under one of the following funding programs:
Please read the requirements of the program you are interested in before contacting Carleton International (click on the program above for full details). To be eligible for these programs, you must be enrolled at a university in an eligible country outside Canada when applying and during the scholarship period. These programs are for SHORT-TERM RESEARCH OR STUDY VISITS ONLY – they are not for full-time studies in a degree program at Carleton University.
- What is the application process for research visits?
-
To begin the application process, a student first needs to find a Carleton faculty member to host them during their visit. Once a host/supervisor has been secured, the student should contact the International Projects Coordinator for an application form. The completed form, along with all supporting materials, is then returned to the Coordinator at least one week prior to the deadline on the program website.
The competitions for all of the above programs typically open in January, with a deadline in early March. Please keep an eye on the program website (links above) to know when the program opens.
- How do I find a host for a research visit?
-
Securing a host is the responsibility of the applicant. You should first browse the faculty list of the department that is most appropriate given your own studies. Choose one or several professors whose research interests match your own and contact them directly. Give them enough time to consider the request. Generally, professors want to ensure a good fit and may ask to speak with you before making a decision.
- Who submits the application?
-
The application must be submitted by the host institution. At Carleton, it is submitted by the International Projects Coordinator, who will be the ongoing contact for the student on the administrative side of the award, including communicating the results, disbursing the funding, and assisting with entry into Canada.
- What is the submission deadline?
-
Important:
Carleton sets an internal deadline at least one week prior to the submission deadline for the program. This is to allow for review of the materials, to make adjustments if necessary, and to have time for the submission process. As a result, any applications sent after this internal deadline cannot be guaranteed for submission. If any late applications have documents missing or incorrect information, you will not be contacted for corrections.
- How do I hear about the results?
-
Carleton International will communicate the results to all applicants from Carleton as soon as they are released by the agency administrating the program. Do not be concerned if you don’t hear from us by the date indicated on the program website as there can often be delays in the review process by the agency.
- Will I need a study or work permit?
-
All visiting student researchers conducting research-only visits under one of the programs above will require a work permit (not a study permit). Carleton International will assist with this process.
