Strengthening Carleton’s Indo-Pacific Partnerships (SCIPP) is a Carleton International project that provides funding for developing partnerships and research collaborations with institutions in the Indo-Pacific region. The project offers 4 to 5 awards to faculty members per application cycle (2026-27 and 2027-28). Each award is valued at $10,000 CAD in seed funding to support travel and other expenses related to starting a research project with a partner in an eligible country.

Applications must demonstrate a commitment and potential for long-term engagement and collaboration, whether through ongoing research activities, teaching practices, agreements, future mobilities, or other plans. Awardees are expected to use some of the funds for travel to the partner institution, and the rest for costs that contribute to advancing joint research. The proposed research activities and outcomes must align with the Strategic Objectives of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.

Applicant Eligibility

The program is open to full-time faculty members at the rank of Assistant, Associate, of Full Professor. Please note that only Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible.

Partner Eligibility

PIs can propose partners at any institution in an eligible country in the Indo-Pacific region. Countries that are not eligible include People’s Republic of China, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and Myanmar. Applications to visit partners in countries under travel advisories issued by the Government of Canada will also not be considered.

Project partners must be full-time employees at the partner organization. All legally incorporated organizations as per their country’s regulations are eligible partners, including post-secondary institutions, public and private entities, as well as not-for-profits.

Term

Awards are tenable for a period of one year. Awardees must complete planned activities, including travel to the partner, within the term of the award. The research projects that are initiated through this seed funding are expected to continue beyond the one-year term. Award recipients must provide a report at the end of the award, outlining the completed activities and outcomes.

Value of Award

Each award is valued at $10,000 CAD. A portion of the funding must be used by the PI to travel to the partner institution. The remainder can cover other costs of the project. A list of eligible expenses is provided on the application form. No funds can be transferred to a partner.

How to Apply

The following documents are required for a complete application:

  • Completed Application Form
  • Short CVs (max 6 pages) for both the PI and the partner
  • Letter of Support from the partner.
    • Letters must confirm the partner’s commitment to the project and long-term partnership as well as outline the benefits of the collaboration to their institution.
