About the Ph.D. Program
The Ottawa-Carleton Graduate School of Economics (OCGSE) offers the joint program between the two Economics Departments at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. This new and innovative Graduate school builds on more than 35 years of cooperation between the two academic departments. The OCGSE includes the joint Ph.D. program but also the two M.A. programs in Economics of the University of Ottawa and Carleton University.
If you are considering applying for the OCGSE, please see the information about the application process. If you have any questions, please contact the program supervisor at minjoon.lee@carleton.ca.
Professional and Academic Development
Students work with 60 faculty members from both Carleton University and University of Ottawa. Students also attend academic events (see below) including seminars and conferences, on both campuses.
Being in the capital city of Canada comes with great advantages. Proximity to the Bank of Canada, Statistics Canada, and other government agencies provides opportunities to network, easier access to data, and job opportunities at these agencies even before graduation.
The program has an innovative curriculum, including the second-year-paper course that helps students transition to a researcher.
OCGSE boasts excellent placement records. Recent placement includes tenure-track positions at research-intensive Universities in Canada and Overseas. Many alumni work at the government agencies.
Ph.D. Offerings
The breadth of expertise is provided in eight fields:
- Econometrics

General Graduate Information
Workshops, Thesis Defenses and Seminars
The Department of Economics hosts a “Brown Bag” seminar series for informal presentations of ongoing research by faculty, visiting scholars, and Ph.D. students, as well as discussions of research ideas. Research seminars are formal presentations from faculty and researchers from other institutions.
During the academic year of 2024-2025, some seminars will be held in person and some online. If you have any questions regarding online access to seminars, please contact the seminar coordinator, Professor Dana Galizia.
All seminars will be held in the Kanta Marwah Seminar Room (D-880 Loeb) in the Department of Economics.
A thesis defense is a pivotal academic event where doctoral candidates present and defend their research findings before a committee of experts. This event marks the culmination of years of rigorous study and original research.
OCGSE students are invited to watch thesis defenses. The schedule for workshops and thesis defenses will be updated on the workshops and thesis defenses page.
OCGSE students will receive emails in advance regarding upcoming social and networking events (including University of Ottawa events).
