Admissions Funding
Domestic applicants may be offered:
- a teaching assistantship valued at $12,085.00/year up to 2 years for M.A. students or up to 5 years for Ph.D. students
- a graduate scholarship of $2,000 – $10,000 for 1 year for M.A. students or $5,000 – $15,000 for up to 5 years for Ph.D. students
- research assistance contracts of various amounts offered by individual faculty members
International applicants may be offered:
- a teaching assistantship valued at $12,085.00/year up to 2 years for M.A. students or up to 5 years for Ph.D. students
- a summer graduate scholarship of $2,000/year up to 1 year for M.A. students needing to study full-time in the spring/summer, or up to 4 years for Ph.D. students
- All international Ph.D. students are eligible for the International Doctoral Tuition Support that reduces their tuition to the domestic level for up to 5 years

External Awards for Graduate Students
- Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS):
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program provides merit-based scholarships to recognize academic excellence in all disciplines of academic studies at the master’s and doctoral level. Qualifying students with exceptional academic grades may apply to be considered for an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS).

- Applications for this award open on August 15 and must be received before November 15.
- OGS awards are announced by Graduate Studies at Carleton University typically towards the end of the Winter term.
- Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Scholarships:
NSERC is the major federal agency responsible for funding natural sciences and engineering research in Canada which directly funds university professors and students as well as Canadian companies to perform research and training.
- Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grants, fellowships and scholarships:
SSHRC is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports research and training in the humanities and social sciences.

Donor-Funded Awards for Economics
Donor-funded awards are financial awards provided by an individual or organization to Carleton. They are awarded by nominations from the economics department awards committee and are based on academic merit, financial need and/or specific research areas.
- Randall Geehan Memorial Scholarship: Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Economics, to a deserving fourth-year Honours student or graduate student whose studies emphasize quantitative work in economics. Endowed in 1990 by colleagues, family, and friends in memory of Dr. Randall Geehan, who was a professor in the Department of Economics.
- Eddie West Memorial Scholarship: Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Economics to an outstanding graduate student who is studying the role of the state in economic activity. Endowed in 2001 in memory of Edwin West, Professor Emeritus.
- Gilles Paquet Scholarship: Awarded annually to the most outstanding graduate student in the Economics Program. The scholarship was established in 2001 by friends and former students of Dr. Gilles Paquet, a former Chair of the Economics Department and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs. The recipient will be chosen each year by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Economics.
- W. Irwin Gillespie Grad Scholarship: Awarded annually to the most outstanding Ph.D. student in the Economics program, preference is given to a student whose study focuses on public economics. The scholarship was established in 2001 by the Taylor-Ebanks family in memory of Professor W. Irwin Gillespie, a member of the Department of Economics from 1964 to 1997. Dr. Marvin Taylor, a member of the family, was the last Ph.D. student Professor Gillespie supervised before he passed away.
- H. Edward English Memorial Scholarship: Awarded annually, to one or more outstanding graduate students, studying development or international affairs in the Department of Economics or the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. The scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Economics and/or the Director of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. Endowed in 2004 by family, friends and colleagues in memory of H. Edward (Ted) English and to commemorate his 50 years of service to Carleton University. Revised 2010 in memory of Ted and Katherine English.
- John McManus Memorial Bursary: Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Economics, to a graduate student entering or proceeding from one year to another pursuing a degree in Economics. Recipients must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person) and must also meet OSAP’s Ontario residency requirement. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. Endowed 2006 by Stephen and Ina Ferris in memory of John C. McManus, a longtime friend and fellow professor at Carleton University.
- Bijit Bora Graduate Prize: Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Economics, to an outstanding graduate student entering or proceeding from one year to another in the Department of Economics at Carleton University. Recipients must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person) and must also meet OSAP’s Ontario residency requirement. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. Endowed in 2006 by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Bijit Bora.
- Huntley Schaller Memorial Scholarship: Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Economics to an outstanding graduate student. The intent of this award is to encourage the pursuit of research in economics. Endowed in 2015 in memory of Huntley Schaller.
- Afshan Dar-Brodeur Scholarship for Excellence in Economics: Awarded annually, by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Economics to outstanding graduate students entering or continuing in a graduate degree program in Economics at Carleton University. Endowed in 2021 in loving memory of Afshan Dar-Brodeur by her family, Atul Dar, Najma Sharif, Mathieu Brodeur, Sindura Dar and Aneesh Chhabra.
